Stephen F. Austin
This is Stephen Fuller Austin. He was born on November 3, 1793 in Virginia. His parents were Moses and Maria Austin. He died on December 27, 1836. He is known as the Father of Texas.
Location of Colony: Rich site between San Antonio and Brazos River. This was in the Coastal Plains area.
Bodies of Water: Colorado River, Brazos River, and San Antonio River.
Major Towns: San Felipe de Austin. Present day San Antonio, Temple, Houston, and Beaumont.
Families: First, he took 300 families. Known as the "Old 300". (But was exactly 297). Then, he got more contracts and took 900 people.
Best Qualities: Great Land for Farming, had fertile land, far away from the Comanches, and was successful.
Land for Each Family: 640 acres for the Head of the Family. 320 acres for the wife. 160 acres for each child. 80 acres for each slave.
Cost for Each Acre of Land: He collected 12.5 cents per acre.
Requirements: The families would have to give up their United States citizenship. The families would have to raise livestock. The families must work and pay off their land. The settlers must follow the rules, including the Provisions of the 1824 Colonization Law of of Coahuila y Tejas.
